This program offers intensive Russian language study in Riga, Latvia’s cosmopolitan capital city on the Baltic Sea. Students will study in Riga’s historic center, known for its blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture, cafes and parks, and Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. The immersive study experience combines communicative Russian language courses taught by native speakers with an exploration of Latvia’s energetic life and an introduction to Baltic history and culture. Unique learning experiences and excursions include a Central Market food tour, visit to the U.S. Embassy, museums and theatres, day trips and overnight excursions.

Eligibility

This program is open to all interested students who have completed RUS 1120 with a “C-“ or better at the time of application. Due to the language-intensive nature of this program, all participants must take a Russian language course while abroad. Participants who will have completed the full sequence of Russian language courses prior to the program may still participate but must contact IP-AcademicAdvising@fsu.edu before applying to the program to ensure appropriate academic advising & course registration.

Housing

Students will be housed in shared apartment-style accommodations. The controlled-access residence building includes Wi-Fi, common areas, gym facilities, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, reception desk, and other security measures. Overnight guests are not allowed in program housing.

Excursions & Group Activities

Plans may change due to unexpected events and/or new opportunities. Immersion and social events planned for this program may include:

  • Welcome dinner and orientation
  • Walking tour of Old Town neighborhood
  • Overnight excursion to Tallinn, Estonia including guided tours and museum visit
  • Guided tours of the Museum of Riga Holocaust and Jewish Ghetto
  • Riga Central Market Visit
  • Museum visits to Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, The Corner House, Museum of the Occupation
  • Guest lectures
  • Traditional cooking class and film screenings
  • Theatre performance
  • Farewell dinner
