The program is based in Valencia, Spain, which has a goal to become the most sustainable city in the world. The coursework focuses on communicating and proposing solutions for the world’s most daunting science and engineering challenges. Students will explore the climate services enacted throughout Valencia – the first city to conduct a full audit of their tourism carbon footprint. Climate change across the region is explored during visits with industry experts to better understand the increased impacts of climate change on the environment. Students will explore ways that science and engineering are communicated throughout Valencia with excursions to Turia Garden and the City of Arts and Sciences. This program aligns with the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars Program.

Eligibility

This program is open to all interested undergraduate students.

Housing

Program housing is in shared apartments in the historic district of the city. Apartments are located either on the top floors of the study center or in nearby buildings. Amenities include fully-equipped kitchens, lounge space, cable TV, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, weekly cleaning service with a change of bed linens and towels, and secure access to the study center’s library, computer lab, and study spaces. Meal vouchers that can be redeemed at restaurants across Spain are also provided. Overnight guests are not allowed in program housing. For a list of hotels near the campus, please click here.

Excursions & Group Activities

Plans may change due to unexpected events and/or new opportunities. Immersion and social events planned for this program may include:

  • Full participation in the Valencia Broad Curriculum’s social/community calendar
  • Guided tour of Turia Garden
  • Visit to City of Arts and Sciences
  • Guided tour of Climate Service Companies with guest speakers
  • Guest speakers from Wildland Fire-Related Excursion and National Park Service Fire
  • Experiences and guest speakers from sustainable tourism, circular economies, sustainable/resilience planning
