How does a thousand years of history shape a country and its people? This course explores the history of Czechia from the 13th century to the present through the stories of its people, culture, food, art, and historic places.
Students will learn about Czech history beyond the classroom by visiting historic sites, memorials, museums, and public spaces throughout the country. We’ll look at the roles of rulers, politicians, writers, artists, and everyday people in shaping Czech society and consider how their experiences continue to influence Czech identity today.
Using primary sources, field study, and individual and collective narratives, we’ll explore the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped Czechia. We’ll also consider how people remember the past, how those memories shape the present, and how history continues to influence Czech culture and identity today.
