Summer - Design and Management Semester

Students participating in the summer semester may take one or both of two 6-week sessions. To earn 12 credits, however, students will need to complete both sessions.

None of these courses requires hands-on laboratory work. Many of them will prioritize backstage visits to London theatres and sceneshops.

Session 1

2 or 3 courses from:
Theatre Management (TPA4400)
An introduction to the economic and managerial challenges of contemporary theatre with the participation of a leading West End producer.
Stage Management TPA 4601
Methods and techniques of managing simple dramatic shows to complex multiscene productions.
Historic Costume for Stage: Costume History/Museum Research (THE4260)
An examination of costume history and design, using the extensive resources of London's unique museums, galleries and costume shops.
Stagecrafts in London THE 4935
A survey of the scenic, lighting, sound and costume design of major London shows, including backstage tours and talks with the designers.
Introduction to London Theatre THE 3061

Session 2
2 or 3 courses from:
History of Architecture and Decor THE 4285
Examination of the development of architecture and interior design.
Designing Shakespeare (THE4935)
A focus on the history and current practice of design for shakespear's plays. This course will examine the major traditions of Shakespeare production and focus on contemporary designs in London at the Globe Theatre, the National Theatre and in the West End, and in Stratford at the RSC.
Stage Makeup (TPA 2248)
An introduction to basic makeup for the stage. Emphasis is on the modelling of the face with makeup.
Lighting Design 2 TPA 4021
The lighting design process for a variety of spaces. Emphasis is on script analysis and the creation and use of paperwork as well as practical aspects of lighting.
Introduction to London Theatre THE 3061 (mandatory)
