Adventure Tourism

Experience the many delights New Zealand has to offer, from outdoor adventure activities to excellent cuisine — all set against the scenic backdrop of the country’s iconic beauty. Explore various aspects of the hospitality industry through a wide range of experiences from hiking to a geyser and visiting natural geothermal mud baths to wine tasting and partaking in a traditional Māori feast. Gain a deep appreciation for Polynesian culture and explore the interaction between travel, ecosystems, and host communities while developing professional skills.
Eligibility
This program is open to all interested undergraduate students but is of particular interest to Hospitality majors.
Other Considerations & Requirements
Priority is given to students in good conduct standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher; exceptions may be granted upon appeal. Please note this program includes physical activities such as zorbing, planting trees, and mild hikes.
Note: Do not purchase airline tickets until advised to do so in the IP portal.
Housing
You'll live in a centrally located, shared apartment-style hotel with shared kitchen, private bathroom, washing machine, and Wi-Fi. You'll also have access to additional hotel amenities.
Note: Overnight guests are not allowed in program housing.


Academics
On this program, you'll study a focused curriculum with an FSU faculty member. You’ll have the opportunity to use the city as your classroom through immersive academic experiences.
Excursions & Activities
You'll receive a program calendar before you leave; here are some examples taken from past programs of potential excursions & activities you may do:
Overnight trip: Rotoura
Day trips: Waitakere region (including black sand beaches), Motuihe Island (including nature walk & tree conservation project)
Academic & local experiences: Sail in Auckland Harbor, All Blacks New Zealand rugby experience, whales & dolphins boat safari, visit to Sheep World, traditional Māori cultural visit, tour of the Waitomo glowworms caves, zorbing, Hell's Gate experience (including a guided geothermal walk & bathing in mud baths), guest lectures from experts within the tourism industry, and engaging in culinary traditions with tours, tastings, and a cooking class
