Florence Broad Curriculum Summer 2
Course Description

Explore two of the most notorious criminal cases in modern Italian history through the lens of criminal investigation, forensic science, media influence, and the justice system. This course examines the unsolved serial murders attributed to the Monster of Florence and the internationally publicized Amanda Knox case, comparing how investigators, forensic experts, legal professionals, the media, and the public responded to each case.

Using Florence and the surrounding region as the classroom, students will analyze investigative strategies, evaluate forensic evidence, examine legal proceedings, and assess how media coverage shapes public perception and criminal justice outcomes. Through course discussions, guest speakers, and site visits to locations relevant to the cases and the Italian criminal justice system, students will develop an understanding of the challenges and complexities of high-profile criminal investigations in an international context.

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate investigative practices, identify strengths and weaknesses in forensic evidence collection and interpretation, and discuss the broader implications of these landmark cases for criminal justice systems, media ethics, and public trust.
