May be repeated to a maximum of eight semester hours. This course will investigate the biological origins of some of the most well-known monsters in literature and film, many of which were created in 19th century England. We will visit London’s unique museums, gardens, and cultural landmarks to learn how Gothic horror characters such as Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, werewolves, witches, and mummies were inspired by real-life biological phenomena, organisms, and scientists. Topics will include the scientific study of resurrection, immortality, preservation, disease outbreaks, medicinal plants, and genetic disorders.
These topics will be explored through behind-the-scenes access to biological specimens at the Natural History Museum and Kew Gardens, medical collections at the Hunterian museum, the Old Operating Theater, and the Wellcome Museum, and cultural artifacts at the British Museum. Students will also participate in expert-guided tours of Bram Stoker historic sites, London plague- related sites, and medicinal plant gardens.
