This course explores fashion and dress in relation to identity, culture, and the body; global chains of production and sale; uses of/relationships to technology and media; and notions of fashion/clothes as (self-)expression and art. This course will utilize local museum collections, visits to local retailers, documentaries, reference texts, observation activities, and guest lecturers to develop a sociological understanding of how power, cultural context, social institutions, and other axes of social analysis shape what clothing looks like, how and why we wear it, and what goes into producing it.
