Exploring the Human Experience
London Broad Curriculum Summer 1
Course Description

This course explores the historical, cultural, and critical genealogies of the science fiction genre. This section emphasizes the starring role that London and its environs have played in the science fictional imagination. The city will be our extended campus, with excursions and explorations bringing to life the imperial, political, ecological, and technological transformations against which the genre of science fiction developed. Our readings and journeys will take us from the nineteenth-century Atlantic worlds of Frankenstein to the techno-utopian fantasies of the Industrial Revolution to the increasingly science fictional present and into possible futures. As we encounter monsters, aliens, apocalypse, alternate history, dystopia, technology, and magic, we will consider both what speculative fiction has to teach us about London, and what London has to teach us about speculative fiction.
