Course Description

This course is an analysis of current issues and practices in the retail and entrepreneurship industry. Fashion Styling Across Cultures explores how garments, footwear, and accessories are curated to communicate identity, aesthetic, and narrative across distinct global markets, with a primary focus on comparing American and Italian fashion style. Designed to blend creative vision with market awareness, the course examines current trends, regional aesthetics, and the essential intersection of styling, entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices such as recycling, renting, reselling, and repairing. Through immersive field trips in Florence, Italy—including visits to museums, artisan workshops, and retail sites—students examine fashion as a form of cultural expression while navigating the crucial boundaries between cultural appreciation and appropriation. Coursework emphasizes practical application, allowing students to analyze lifestyle needs, curate looks for diverse occasions, and master editorial storytelling through digital media. By developing mood boards, personal and celebrity styling concepts, and hands-on visual projects, students assemble an impressive, professional styling portfolio grounded in global perspectives, ethical storytelling, and rich European heritage.
