Course Description

This course surveys the development of popular music in the United States and internationally from the early 20th century to the present. It covers genres including blues, rock, prog rock (including its close associations with works of the Western canon), pop, R&B, soul, country, and hip hop, while considering the social, economic, and technological factors that helped shape these musical styles.
