Pre-Departure Checklist – Independent Study

  

The information below will guide you through the process of getting prepared for an independent study abroad program. Be diligent and stay on task. Set aside time to review the materials we have prepared for you; begin completing the forms and start checking off the items you have completed.


How to Begin

  • Research locations and course offerings
  • Meet with your academic advisor to discuss options
  • Obtain course approvals from instructors of record at FSU
  • Obtain program approval from the Chair/Dean of your department
  • Get your finances in order
    • Talk with your family about funding
    • Make an appointment with a counselor in Financial Aid to discuss the possibility of receiving additional aid
    • Apply for study abroad scholarships.  Some have early application deadlines, so don’t delay
  • Apply to the foreign institution or program
  • Submit the completed Independent Study Application to International Programs
  • Apply for or renew your passport

After Being Accepted

  • Apply for a visa, if necessary.  (You must have a valid passport to apply for a visa.)
  • Research the city and country where you will be studying
    • Study the language
    • Read local newspapers
    • Browse the internet
  • Determine health requirements and any potential risks for the areas where you will travel; get any necessary vaccinations
  • Learn about banking options while you are abroad
  • Complete all forms and paperwork requested by International Programs
  • Book your flight
  • Make several copies of your passport.  Give one to International Programs, leave one with your family, take one with you (keep it in a place other than where you keep your passport)
  • Register your travel plans with the US State Department and review their International Travel Safety for Students page.  Take with the contact details for the US Embassy/Consulate for the countries to which you will travel.

Before Leaving Campus

  • Update your local/permanent address with the Registrar’s Office
  • Make housing arrangements for your return
  • Apply for graduation, if applicable
  • Explore the option of completing the requirements for the Global Pathways Certificate

While You Are Abroad

  • Email your overseas address and contact information to International Programs, if you have not already provided it
  • Notify International Programs and instructor(s) of record of any changes in your coursework
  • Register for classes for your return semester at FSU
