Spain • Valencia

An ancient city that is now Spain’s third largest, Valencia is an exhilarating mix of history, art, intellectual activity, and civic pride. The remarkable richness of this Hispanic culture’s art and architecture reflects Roman, Visigoth, Moorish, and Aragonese traditions. The many museums spread before students a cultural panorama: El Greco, Goya, and Velazquez; ancient Greek and Iberian ceramics; the wonder of prehistoric fossils. There is also the new Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, with the Museum of the Sciences, L’Hemisfèric cinema-planetarium, the Palace of the Arts, and a huge park and aquarium. Valencia, host to the America’s Cup, also boasts beaches, a wharf and busy port facilities.

Florida State University is especially proud to have its new FSU Study Center, located in a restored building in the historic downtown quarter, adjacent to the Serrano Towers. The center has been renovated with care for the architectural treasures uncovered during the process. Remains from 4th century Rome combine with a state-of-the-art wireless center including classroom space, administrative offices, a computer lab and self-contained student apartments.

Broad Curriculum Program
The Broad Curriculum program gives students the opportunity to earn credits in general requirements and elective courses while experiencing Valencia, surrounding areas of Spain, and neighboring European countries.

Internships
Valencia offers internship positions in areas ranging from business to museums to social services to higher education. Total immersion in Spanish language and culture is part of an internship, and students must have a strong background in both Spanish comprehension and conversation. Click here for more information.

East Meets West
This unique program will bring students from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East together for a rich academic experience focusing on the exchange of cultures. Arabic language instruction plus courses and workshops designed to encourage an objective and open dialogue between the various groups on such subjects as current events, conflict resolution, human rights issues, public diplomacy, and popular culture will be included in the program.

The Iberian Studies Minor
The Iberian Studies Valencia Center Minor enhances and provides focus to a student's program in Spain. The minor is built around the Valencia residency, but can be pursued before and after it as well: 15 credits are required (to include at least two disciplines), of which 9 must be taken in Valencia. Students may choose from various Iberian Studies disciplines. Consult the FSU Bulletin and contact International Programs for formal declaration of the minor.

First Year Abroad Program
The Valencia Study Center is one of our three European locations which is ideal for our First Year Abroad students. Course offerings allow most majors to progress academically while having a unique freshman experience abroad. For details on First Year Abroad Program, click here.
